What The Fold actually does

A laptop sleeve that keeps working after you arrive. Here is what is in it, how it behaves through a working day, and what it is not.

Two jobs, one object

The Fold is cut as a single felt panel with a hinged spine, so closing it makes a sleeve and opening it makes a mat. In sleeve mode it protects the laptop in a bag. In mat mode it sits between the laptop and your lap, and the felt takes the pressure of the front edge off your thighs. There is no liner to unroll and nothing to reassemble.

The shielding layer

Sealed inside the felt is a silver-fiber knit. It sits in the panel that faces your body, so when the sleeve is open on your lap the layer is positioned between you and the device rather than folded away underneath it. Because it is stitched into the construction, the surface you touch is still wool felt: no metallic fabric, no crinkle, no edges to fray.

Wool felt, not foam

Wool felt is dense enough to cushion a laptop without the bulk of molded foam, and it stays flat instead of curling at the corners. The color is a warm Rehbraun brown that hides the marks a bag picks up in a week. Felt naturally holds its shape, so the mat lies flat on a table and the sleeve closes without a zipper.

What it is not

The Fold is not a waterproof case and not a drop-proof shell. It is not a replacement for good posture or for taking a break from the screen. It is a considered layer between a laptop and a body, made to be used every day rather than saved for travel.

Which laptops fit

The founding batch is cut for 14 inch laptops first, which covers most of the models people actually carry. The list below is the fit guide we test against.

  • Dell XPS 1414.5" · fits with case off
  • Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (14 inch)14" · fits
  • MacBook Air 13 (M2, M3)13.6" · room to spare
  • MacBook Pro 14 (M1 to M4)14.2" · snug, by design
  • Surface Laptop 6 (13.8 inch)13.8" · fits

Care

Spot clean with cool water and a little mild soap, then let it air dry flat. Do not machine wash or tumble dry: heat and agitation will shrink the felt and disturb the sealed layer.
