About Elara
A small studio in New York, making one object at a time.
Elara is an independent design studio based in New York, and The Fold is our first product. It is a laptop sleeve made from wool felt that opens flat into a lap pad, with a thin EMF-shielding layer sealed inside the fabric, between you and your device.
Most laptop sleeves are built for the commute and nothing else. You unzip them, take the laptop out, and the sleeve spends the rest of the day on the floor. The Fold is designed around the hours that come after: the cafe table, the couch, the train seat, the kitchen counter. Open the flap and the sleeve becomes a flat, padded surface that sits between your laptop and your lap, so the hard edge and the heat stay off your legs and the felt stays where you put it.
The shielding layer is the part you cannot see. It is a silver-fiber knit, sealed inside the felt so there is no loose fabric, no crinkle, and no separate liner to lose or forget at home.
It is for people who actually work with a laptop on their lap: commuters, students, freelancers, and anyone who gave up on a desk years ago but still wants the hours between meetings to feel considered.
We develop in small runs with a felt mill and a cut-and-sew shop we work with directly, and every sample is tested on real laps before it moves forward. The founding batch is being made now, sized for 14 inch laptops first, with more sizes to follow. Join the waitlist and we will write to you before it opens.
